Advanced Placement Program

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program is a partnership between high schools and colleges and universities across North America. Students at St. Ignatius can pursue university level studies while still in high school. Students demonstrate their scholastic achievement on international exams, excel in their high school programming, improve their chances of being accepted by the university of their choice and gain exemption from some introductory course work at university. Students can receive credit, advanced placement, or both from thousands of colleges and universities participating in the Advance Placement Program.

Although the core of these subjects parallels that of Grade 12 courses, the AP's provide an enriched program, and students would be aware that considerable independent work, under teacher guidance will be necessary. Students do not receive Ontario credit for an AP course but prepare for the AP exam at the same time as they are preparing for the 4U exam in the subject.

Advantages to taking AP courses and exams are numerous. Students develop analytical and study skills required to succeed in university courses. Candidates receiving a grade 3, 4 or 5 may be given advanced standing and/or credit at university. Advanced Placement courses also provide direction for students in selecting university majors.

St. Ignatius will be offering AP courses in English, Literature and Composition, Chemistry, Physics, French, Biology, Calculus, English Language and Composition, Human Geography, and World History.

PRE-ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAM

The pre-advanced placement program (AP) at St. Ignatius gives students an opportunity to experience an enriched and
challenging curriculum at the Grade 10 and 11 level. Courses are offered in subject areas in which AP courses are currently taught at the Grade 12 level. In addition to the core Grade 10 and 11 curriculum, pre-AP courses provide considerable independent work, under teacher guidance that is meant to be preparation for Grade 12 AP courses. Students willing to challenge themselves academically would consider Pre-Advanced Placement courses
