After School Program

The Community Recreation Department will continue this year to provide an opportunity for girls to participate in a program called Girl Empowerment. This program is scheduled for Thursdays from 6:00 to 8:00. It is a girls only program designed to get girls active and involved in sport and recreation. Transportation arrangements must be made prior to both as the office area may be closed after the After School Programs have concluded.

All students are welcome to join in and this session is free. This initiative has been brought to you by the Living School Project of Bishop Gallagher in cooperation with the City of Thunder Bay and the Recreation Department.

Thankful Thursdays

Bishop Gallagher is proud to inform you that A&P on River Street has agreed to continue to support our Fresh Fruit Program. A&P is providing our students with fruit on Thursdays, at a discounted cost to our school.

The Fresh Fruit program is a Living School Initiative. Staff and students, both feel that this initiative encourages better eating habits.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mary Mannella a member of Bishop Gallagher's School Council who has volunteered to collect, clean and sort the fruit for us before it is distributed to all of the students. Thanks also to her daughter Amanda and nephew Austin who assist. We can always use some more help and support from you, the parents. If you can volunteer to assist us with this worthy program please contact Mrs. Taylor at the school.

Below left is a photo of our Living School Coordinators: Frank Lacaria, Shelley Taylor and Mrs. McKinnon along with Margaret Good, the OPHEA Living School Consultant at the International HEAL Conference (Healthy Eating Active Living) that was held in November, 2006. The Mannella Family who assists in the pick-up, washing and sorting of the fruit are on the below right.

Winter Activities

Winter Activities
We are very proud to present the seventeenth annual Bishop Gallagher Winter Activity Educational program. This is an extension of your child’s Physical Education. This Recreation Learning experience focuses on helping students develop an appreciation for a healthy lifestyle and an understanding of the importance of leisure pursuits, while enhancing the students’ physical skills.

This program is scheduled for Wednesdays: February 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, March 4th and 11th. Students may choose to participate in one of the following possible activities: Curling, Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding, Indoor Soccer, Bowling, Cross Country Skiing
, Skating, Old Fort William Winter Challenge, and Martial Arts . There will be some timetable changes on Wednesday mornings to accommodate travel times.

Please note that a number of venues set a limit on the number of students who can participate in the activity, based on availability of instructors and safety concerns. In order to fairly accommodate students the procedure will be on a first come, first serve basis.

Please note: The Recreation Education Learning Experience is not optional. All students must sign up for an activity and attend. All students must return to Bishop Gallagher following their winter activity.

Attendance at school is mandatory as it is a regular school day. Students must attend classes in the morning in order to be eligible for the afternoon activity.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do to not hesitate to call the school. Please note that the Safe Arrival Program is in effect during these activities.
As a Living School we are thrilled to be vigorously active and engaged in physical activity and we hope to develop interests and habits that will contribute to future active lifestyles for B.G. students.

RESPECT: October's Virtue

October’s Virtue is:  Respect

Quote of the Month:
“Love one another warmly as Christians,
and be eager to show respect for one another.”
Romans 12:10

Four Virtues Statements for the Month:

1. The first step to achieving respect is to love and respect yourself.

2. “Humankind has not woven the web of life.  We are but one thread in it.  Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.  All things are bound together.  All things connect.” – Chief Seattle

3. Let your actions be guided by Jesus’ words, “Respect your father and your mother; and love your neighbour as you love yourself.”  Matthew 19:19

4. Everyone wants to be treated with consideration and thoughtfulness; we need to remember to treat others in this respectful way.

Thursday, October 9th -  at 9:00- We will
celebrate Thanksgiving Mass with Father Richard
as a Bishop Gallagher community.
